Visualizing Soft and Hard Edges in Maya Modeling

When modeling in the Maya program, to more easily visualize soft/hard edges, you can follow these steps:

  • Go to Windows > Settings/Preferences > Preferences > Display > Polygons > Edges and select the desired option for soft/hard edges. Another method is to select the object in vertex, edge, or face component mode, then Shift + right-click to open the menu. Choose Vertex Normals > Toggle Vertex Normal Display from the menu.

Additionally, you can use the following options:

  • Custom Polygon Display:

  • Right-click on the model and go to "Custom Polygon Display" in the menu.

  • Use the "Soften/Harden Edge" option to specify soft and hard edges.

  • Normal Display Options:

  • Go to the "Display" tab in the top menu.

  • Under "Heads Up Display," activate the "Poly Count" option.

  • Poly count information will appear at the top of the screen, showing "Soft Edges" and "Hard Edges."

  • Viewport 2.0 Settings:

  • Go to the "Display" tab in the top menu.

  • Under "Viewport 2.0," click on "Viewport 2.0 Options."

  • Enable "Wireframe on Shaded" under the "Hardware Texturing" section.

These methods will help you visualize soft and hard edges more comfortably during the modeling process. The choice of method depends on your personal preferences and the requirements of your project.
